Does coffee count?Hydration value by drink

Yes. Coffee, tea, milk, and most everyday drinks hydrate you nearly as well as water. A drink's hydration value is the share of its volume that counts toward your daily goal: in Waterie, a 250 ml coffee counts as about 240 ml. Here is the value the app uses for every built-in drink.

Quick answers

Does coffee count toward hydration?

Yes. In the Beverage Hydration Index study, coffee hydrated about as well as water, and regular coffee drinkers adapt to caffeine's mild diuretic effect. Waterie counts coffee at 95%, so a 250 ml cup adds about 240 ml to your goal. Espresso counts slightly less, at 90%.

Does tea count?

Yes. Black, green, and herbal tea all count at 95%. Sweeter, heavier drinks count a little less: Thai tea at 90% and boba tea at 85%.

Does milk hydrate better than water?

In the Beverage Hydration Index study, milk kept people hydrated longer than water, thanks to its protein, fat, and electrolytes. Waterie caps every drink at 100%, so milk, plant milks, and yogurt drinks count the same as water.

Does soda count?

Yes, mostly. Cola hydrated about as well as water in the study. Waterie counts soda, cola, and diet soda at 90%.

Does beer or other alcohol count?

Only partly. Alcohol makes you pass more urine, and the stronger the drink, the bigger the effect. Waterie counts beer at 60%, wine at 50%, cocktails at 40%, and spirits at 20%. Water alongside is still the better idea.

Do sports drinks and coconut water count?

Yes, fully. Sports drinks, electrolyte water, and coconut water count at 100%, the same as water. Energy drinks and pre-workout drinks count at 85%.

Where these values come from

Waterie's values start from the Beverage Hydration Index, a 2016 study by Maughan and colleagues in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. It compared how much urine people produced in the four hours after drinking one litre of 13 common drinks, including coffee, tea, cola, milk, orange juice, and lager, against the same amount of water.

Drinks outside the study are given values by drink type. Waterie caps every value at 100%, so no drink counts for more than its volume, and it counts alcohol and heavier, sweeter drinks more conservatively than the study's short-term results.

These are the values the app uses today, and they are a practical guide for everyday tracking, not medical advice. If you have a condition that affects your fluid balance, follow your doctor's advice.
